SNAP! Provides Students Opportunity to
Experinence Nature Through Their Own Lens
by Juliana Janson
The Great Lakes Experience conducted a fun and educational event in conjunction with the Buffalo Public Schools on October 20th. The program, called Students, Nature And Photography! (SNAP!), paired high school aged students with volunteers from Johnson Controls, the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Great Lakes Experience. Johnson Controls partially sponsored the event with a grant to provide supplies for SNAP!

The event started with a classroom lesson on nature photography and point-and-shoot cameras. Then the students were taken to the fields and forests of Reinstein Nature Preserve where they put into practice what they had learned. The weather was threatening but held out and allowed for some great photos!

Students were then brought back to the Preserve headquarters to write brief descriptions of the feelings and thoughts that were evoked as a result of the photographs they took. After lunch at Reinstein, the students headed to Tifft Nature Preserve for more photographs. GLE will provide a lasting memory of the day by providing the students with a framed copy of their favorite photograph. Some of the photos will be on display at future GLE festivals in the coming year.

Most students had limited exposure to photography and were excited for the experience. Based on the enthusiasm and engagement of not only the students, but of the volunteers, SNAP! was a huge success!
